Drumsticks - Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome! This FAQ is designed to answer common questions about our unique drumsticks, helping you understand what makes them special and choose the perfect pair for your playing.
About Our Drumsticks
Q1: What kind of wood do you use for your drumsticks?
We craft our drumsticks exclusively from High-Density Heartwood Hickory. Hickory is renowned in the drumming world for providing an excellent combination of strength, resilience, shock absorption, and a natural feel, making it a versatile choice. Our focus on high-density heartwood aims to offer enhanced durability and a longer lifespan compared to typical sapwood hickory sticks.
Q2: What makes your drumstick tips unique?
Our drumsticks feature Injection Molded Nylon tips in an oval shape. These tips are made from a softer nylon compound, designed to deliver a dynamic sound that sits between the warmth of traditional wood tips and the brightness of standard hard nylon tips. A key benefit of our injection molding process is the secure bond it creates, significantly reducing the likelihood of the tip detaching during play.
Q3: What sizes and lengths are available?
We offer our High-Density Heartwood Hickory sticks in three industry-standard diameters:
- 5A .565in
- 5B .605in
- 2B .625in
Furthermore, for each of these diameters (5A, 5B, and 2B), we provide three length options:
- 16 inches
- 16.5 inches
- 17 inches
This range allows you to fine-tune the reach, balance, and feel.
Q4: What other features do your sticks have?
Our sticks feature a medium-long 3.5-inch taper, designed to offer a great balance between rebound and forward feel. They come standard with a smooth lacquer finish. For enhanced grip, we offer an optional Phoenix Grip coating in teal, similar in function to other popular grip coatings. Additionally, every pair is meticulously weight matched and tone paired to ensure consistency between sticks.
Choosing Your Sticks
Q5: How do I choose the right size and length combination?
The best choice depends heavily on personal preference, hand size, and musical application. Here’s a general guide to our offerings:
- Diameter:
- Length:
Experimenting is often the best way to find your perfect match!
Q6: How does your High-Density Heartwood Hickory compare to other woods like Maple or Oak?
Our High-Density Heartwood Hickory sits in a sweet spot favored by many drummers.
- vs. Maple: Hickory is significantly more durable and shock-resistant than Maple. Maple is lighter but wears down and breaks more easily.
- vs. Oak: Oak (typically Japanese Oak) is generally denser, heavier, and potentially more durable than Hickory. However, Hickory offers better shock absorption, which can reduce hand fatigue compared to Oak's rigidity.
Our High-Density Hickory aims to maximize the natural durability of hickory while retaining its comfortable feel and shock absorption.
Q7: What are the main advantages of your Injection Molded Nylon tips over wood or standard nylon?
Our oval-shaped, softer nylon tips offer several key benefits:
- Unique Sound: Designed to provide a sound profile between the warmth of wood and the brightness of typical hard nylon tips, offering versatility.
- Exceptional Durability: Resists chipping, splitting, and wear far better than wood tips, ensuring a consistent sound and shape for longer.
- Secure Attachment: The injection molding process creates a very strong bond, greatly minimizing the risk of the tip coming loose or falling off.
Care & Lifespan
Q8: How should I care for my drumsticks?
To get the most life out of your sticks:
- Storage: Keep them in a stick bag or holder when not in use. This protects them from physical damage and minimizes exposure to extreme temperature or humidity changes, which can cause warping.
- Cleaning: Both the standard lacquer finish and the optional water-based Phoenix Grip can be cleaned gently with Windex or mild soap and water on a cloth. Wipe down your sticks after playing, especially if your hands sweat, to remove moisture and grime.
- Playing Technique: While our sticks are built for durability, proper technique always helps. Avoid striking cymbal edges directly at harsh angles; aim for glancing blows across the bow or surface. Good technique reduces unnecessary stress on the stick shaft.
Q9: How long will my drumsticks last?
Drumstick lifespan is highly variable and depends greatly on factors like your playing intensity, musical style, technique, and how often you play. Our High-Density Heartwood Hickory is selected for its strength and aims for a longer lifespan than typical, less dense sapwood hickory sticks. Combined with our durable Injection Molded Nylon tips, these sticks are designed for enhanced longevity. However, all drumsticks are ultimately consumable items. Replace sticks if they become significantly warped, cracked, or if the shaft becomes heavily frayed, as this affects balance and increases the chance of breakage.
